This is a pain which starts in the lower back and runs along the sciatic nerve through one or both legs.it is the longest nerve in the body.

Symptoms
A shooting pain or spasm in the lower back and along the sciatic nerve that runs from the hip through the thigh to the ankle.
When the sciatic nerve is compressed or irritated, it can cause pain, numbness and a tingling sensation that
radiates from your lower back and travels down one of your legs to your foot and toes.
The pain can range from being mild to very painful, and may be made worse by sneezing, coughing, or sitting for a long period of time.
Some people with sciatica may also experience muscle weakness in the affected leg.
While people with sciatica can also have general back pain, the pain associated with sciatica usually affects the buttocks and legs much more than the back.

Causes
Trauma, hernia, a ruptured or slipped disc in the lumbar vertebrae -3, 4 & 5 and the coccyx at the base of the spinal column.the inflammation of the nerve is called neuritis.

Treatment
Rest and application of hot water and later cold (ice) on the lower back and on the leg.
Stretching. Sit on a bed or chair carefully lower your head towards your knees 15 – 20 times, using your hands to help you straighten up.(see exercise).
Afterward massage with hot aloe lotion with eucalyptus into the sore area.
In addition,take vitamin B1, B12 and E.

However, a combination of things you can do at home – such as taking over-the-counter painkillers, exercising and using hot or cold packs – may help reduce the symptoms until the condition improves.
In more persistent cases, you may be advised to follow a structured exercise programme under the supervision of a physiotherapist, have injections of anti-inflammatory and painkilling medication into your spine, and/or take stronger painkiller tablets.
In rare cases, surgery may be needed to correct the problem in your spine.

NOTE- YOU SHOULD SEE A LICENSED CHIROPRATOR SINCE THE PROBLEM COULD BE WITH YOUR VERTEBRAL COLUMN
.
Added – aloe vera, royal jelly.
